Communities
On this page, I have assembled data on Jewish communities as they existed in the study area before 1933. The data is derived from the individual community studies published in Herbert Obenaus, ed., Historisches Handbuch der jüdischen Gemeinden in Niedersachsen und Bremen, the data in each being derived from the most part by community records held at the Central Archive for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem. I have augmented these figures by data available on the Alemannia Judaica website. A table of communities is data the bottom of this page. NB: community membership numbers differ from the number of Jew who lived in a given location, as Jewish individuals or families living in a place without a synagogue would belong to the nearest synagogue, such as was the case for the family living in Carolinensiel, who belonged to the synagogue in the Kreis seat Wittmund.
